Have you ever received that call from a friend asking if you wanted to go to a pro football game, go shopping or go to a concert on the spur of the moment? Here are a few quick tips to keep yourself from being the overspender.
1. Take Cash- Limit your spending by taking a set amount of cash with you and, if you can, leave the rest of your "spending instruments" (credit or debit card, check book, etc.) at home. If you only take $50 with you, you can't spend $60.
2. Use Debit- While cash is the best option, the debit card keeps you from being charged interest by rolling up a balance on your credit card. Also, it has been proven that using cash or a debit card dramatically reduces one's spending due to the fact that it is our money, that is, money that we worked hard to earn, rather than their money, which always seems easier to spend.
3. Prepaid Credit Card- This may even been better than using a debit card because your checking account is your spending limit with a debit card. Have $1,000 in it? That's your limit. If you don't have very good will power, you can get into a lot of trouble. Regarding cash, let's be honest: some places actually don't handle cash very well, as strange as that sounds. Plastic is becoming the currency of the world. So, a prepaid card might fit the bill. While you will be charged a small fee up front to load it, it is valid anywhere a credit card is and your limit is the amount you load into it. Unlike cash, if it's stolen, you can cancel it like a credit card and save yourself some money.
In the end, we all want to have fun with our friends when they call us with some unexpected fun. Just be careful not to break yourself in the process.
