Get Out of Your Own Way

(August 10, 2008)
Scientists have discovered that the average human thinks over 50,000 thoughts daily. Just think about some of the thoughts that you have had already today! Every thought you have is either moving you closer to the glory of God or undermining your walk with Him.

We have got to think how God thinks. The only thing that you have total, complete control over are your thoughts. When was the last time you thought about what you've been thinking about? If you haven't in a long time (or ever), then you are undisciplined in your thinking. You've not paid attention to your thoughts running through your mind and they've probably taken you down a path that is undisciplined.

Your thoughts determine your success or failure. You may have heard that "change is an inside job" and it's true. You can change regardless of your circumstances. If you want to change, you have to begin to think like God thinks. It's not difficult; what's more difficult are the consequences of living with an undisciplined mind. Like John Maxwell said, "You can pay now or you can pay later, but sometime you will have to pay."

God is just, faithful, lovely, excellent, omnipotent and praise-worthy, among thousands of other wonderful things. If you want to think like God, then you must embody these qualities of thought.

Paul encouraged people to think like God. By nature, we are negative people. So, to make a shift to a joyful, spirit-filled life, you must be proactive in your thinking. It takes discipline and mental toughness to come back from adversity. If you aren't disciplined, happiness will be a random occurrence. People mentally die because of laziness of thought. Many times we settle for less than what God has in store for us. Henry Ford said "Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right." For example, your body can be influenced by your own thoughts. You can get angry at something someone did, which can, in turn, raise your blood pressure.

The bottom line is that 90% of your thoughts are actually old thoughts. They are the same ol' thoughts that you've had day in and day out, most of which lead you to think your situation can never get better than it is. This is why change has become so hard for people, but it doesn't have to be that way. Focus on what you want and not on what you don't.

Your success tomorrow is determined by your thoughts today!
