Too Lazy to Follow God?

(September 14, 2008)
We have a tendency to want everything done for us. Look around at the world of convenience we live in as proof positive of that. Unfortunately, the church has followed suit as well. It's in crisis: we'd rather "scoot" along through life rather than walk along side God. We ask ourselves "Why should I be a disciple when I've already got a spot reserved in Heaven?"

In Matthew 4, Jesus doesn't demand that people follow Him, but He does expect it. "Come, follow me" He says. "And I will make you fishers of men."

You do have to make an investment in God with your head, your mind and your soul. You need to actively follow Him, pursue Him. A disciple is one who follows The Master everyday. Occupying a pew on Sunday does not make you a disciple. Reading the Bible daily doesn't even make you a disciple. So, what is discipleship?

1. Get the message out. We need to tell people the whole Good News, that God will give them hope and deliver them from mediocrity, failure and sickness. God wants you to be effective at spreading the Word. Missions create miracles! A good disciple does disciple's work. However, if you're saved, but you're depressed and oppressed all the time, who wants to be part of that? What message are you sending? Find your way to give your gift. Are you an organizer? Are you an intercessor? Are you someone who needs to be a financial blessing?

2. Be the message, live the message. When they see you, they believe that every Christian is exactly like you. Be authentic. Don't be the person who has to say to someone "do as I say, not as I do". Dynamic discipleship is one where showing your spiritual scars breeds genuinity in others, thus creating community. God doesn't waste scars. He allows us to make some mistakes so that you can show others that you are a genuine, authentic person who is a devout, saved Christian man or woman. You can't share your testimony without being tested.

2. Keep moving. God is creative. Every second, God is doing something new. God is always on the move. He is every changing, but never changes. Don't get too comfortable. Be ready at anytime to do God's work regardless of your degree of comfort.

We do a great disservice to people if all we do is get them saved. That, of course, is wonderful, but, that's just the starting point. It's time for us to join the race and truly become disciples!
